Weighted blankets, often used for therapeutic purposes, may pose significant risks for infants under 12 months. Research suggests they could increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by restricting movement or causing overheating. Due to their potential dangers, these blankets are not recommended for babies. Ensure your baby's sleep environment is safe by sticking to lightweight, breathable materials and following safe sleep guidelines to reduce the risk of SIDS.
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents against using weighted sleep products for babies during sleep. Although weighted blankets or sleep sacks may offer calming pressure, using them while a baby is sleeping could increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or other sleep-related complications, according to the organization.
Weighted items are not recommended because it is uncertain when infants will begin to roll over, and they need unrestricted movement as they develop. She also noted that there is no supporting evidence for the safety of weighted sleep sacks for infants, and therefore, their use is not advised for children of any age.
“Many parents use a weighted blanket or sleep sack as a last resort to help their children sleep through the night.”

“Stuffed animals or blankets should not be placed in a child's crib or bassinet younger than one year old, and weighted products should not be used for children under three.”
- Dr. Nilong Vyas
Weighted products can help reduce anxiety and provide “a sense of calm,” but while a weighted blanket could be used while cuddling a child at least 2 years old before bedtime or while reading a book together, using it for sleep has potential risks.
